Hobie 17 North American Championships 2021

The Hobie 17 North American Championships this year are being held at Washington Park Beach, Michigan City, Indiana (on Lake Michigan), Hobie Fleet 126. While most people associate Hobie sailing in the ocean Lake Michigan offers sandy beaches and surfing waves. So, this group of Hobie sailors feels right at home.

Even the best plans sometimes don’t materialize in sailing. We are always dependant on the wind. Today unfortunately the wind didn’t arrive till later in the day. The wind did arrive later in the day with a great sailing breeze. With the wind 10-11 knots from the North with a four-foot swell to keep everyone entertained. The sailors enjoyed three great races.

It was a tough day on the water for the second day of the Hobie 17 North American Championships. With the light and unstable winds, only two races could be sailed today. There was a slight change in the top 3 positions.

With a fantastic breeze today there were 4 races sailed. It was a perfect 13-19 knots from the South West making it the best Hobie 17 weather. There was some movement on the leader board with podium positions changing.

Tomorrow is the last day of racing when we will have a 2022 Hobie 17 North American Champion.

Three races on the final day and there was another change in the podium places. Phil Collins remained unchallenged for the top spot. Well done to Phil who is the 2021 Hobie 17 North American Champion. Lake Michigan challenged these sailors with varying wind and sea conditions during the four-day event. Congratulations to all the sailors and volunteers who made the 2021 Hobie 17 North American Championships such a wonderful Hobie event.
